Sonic Freerunner engine 1.3 has been released, and we want to know what can we do to make the engine better. As you may or may not have heard, Sonic Freerunner is moving to Unity. The old Sonic Freerunner engine which was based upon the BlitzSonic engine is now a general purpose engine, for use in your own Sonic fan game project. We are still improving upon it, and we would like to know what we can do to make it better. If you haven't played it yet, you can download the Sonic Freerunner BlitzSonic engine at one of the following links: www.eightbitdragonstudios.com/downloads.htmlrapidshare.com/files/2923261348/Sonic_Freerunner_engine_1.3.zip

Awesome as always!
My wishlist in response to the poll:
I hope that the unity version of the engine is as light as the blitz3d one, I tried the udk Sonic engine and it's really heavy, some computers have problems running it.
As for the improvements, I think that the greatest improvement you can do is making a camera system that alow you to play without using the mouse. Something like Super Mario 64, where you have some setting for the camera but it's automatic. It's hard to do, I know, but it would be awesome.
Other things I would like to see, improved handling/physics (rolling when you crouch on slopes instead of spindashing, non-scripted springs, better collision on edges, better controls at low speed), some fun moves like walljump-wallrunning jumping on a wall, or... don't know if it could fit with the classic feel of this project, but I really liked the r-tricks in Sonic Advance 2, and I would like to see a 3D version of that (maybe allow the tricks only with the homing attack shield, if it's going to be in).
Last, I selected "More fun stuff", because I would like to see some other character, at least Tails and Knuckles, but other character are welcome if they have some fun moves, just for more variety-replay value (I'm a big fan of the Sonic Advance 1-2-3 cast of characters).

Sorry for the slow reply. The Unity engine should be medium-light, however we may end up putting all the stages, sounds, and music all in one exe file, so ram may be an issue. As for the engine, it should run fine on most machines as long as you have the ram. The camera in the Blitz3D engine is a problem for everyone, even our own team complains about it. It is one of my top priorities for the next release of the engine. I'll try to tweak the physics a little bit to make it easier to roll on slopes, and changing the handling at low/high speed is something we were once working on but never finished. The collision on edges should be ok, but if you are using your own stage be sure to remove smoothing from the tops of surfaces or Sonic will tend to lean toward the edge and it will look funky. And, I'm not totally clear on what you mean by non-scripted springs, the springs we have are placed by xml, which isn't really scripted to me. Their strength can also be edited in the xml. Are you talking about placing them by some other means? And finally, other characters is something I brought up recently because it seems we are the only ones who still have Sonic as our only character, meanwhile other people are adding new characters like crazy. I'm not a modeler, or animator, or model/animation ripper. The only way we can get a new character in is if we do one or more of those things, and I'm not 100% on whether or not I can convince TwilightZoney or someone else to do it. In the mean time, I could try adding support for multiple characters to make it easy to add your own.

Thanks for the reply.
I don't know how the game's code is written, but playing the engine and looking at the springs to me it feels like when you jump on a spring there is an automated part then you can take control over the character, only after the automated part of the jump. Don't know if it's truly automated, but it feels so to me, maybe it's just because touching a spring removes all or too much momentum from Sonic, it's possible?
The collision thing, they're ok, I was referring about some special cases, like when you jump on the text-panel in the pivot point tutorial level, sometimes it looks like Sonic remains standing on midair falling very slowly.
overall, the engine works very fine, and I think that this engine is the best fan-made Sonic 3D engine ever done.
